How Bad Is It To Run Low on Brake Fluid?

Your vehicle has many fluids that keep its system in check. Brake fluid is one of those important fluids that correspond to the braking system. Without it, you may risk catastrophic brake failure. If you want to learn more about brake fluid and what happens if you run low, keep on reading.

Brake fluid is necessary for your brakes to work. When you apply your foot to the brake pedal, the pressure is translated through the brake fluid to stop your car. Without the necessary amount of this fluid, your vehicle will not be able to go through the process of slowing down your tires.

What Are the Signs of Low Brake Fluid?

As you drive your car time and time again, you should know what feels normal and what doesn’t. When your brake fluid runs low, there are various warning signs that you can catch.

  • Pedal-related problems - If it takes too much pressure or barely any pressure at all to move the brake pedal, your brake fluid is most likely low or severely contaminated.
  • Puddles around car wheels - If you notice one or more fluid puddles around your parked vehicle, it may be your brake fluid. Brake fluid is light yellow, light brown, or clear in color and sometimes has a fishy smell. It has a similar viscosity to vegetable oil.
  • Brake warning light or message - If your brake warning light comes on, you should take that as a sign to have your braking system inspected, including the fluid!

Because brake fluid plays such an essential role in your braking system, it should not be ignored. You may notice your brakes aren’t as effective as they once were when the fluid gets low, and continuing to run on limited brake fluid can lead to serious accidents. Don’t take a chance on your brakes, and come by Elite Auto Experts for a brake fluid check and/or flush. We’ll check for leaks and ensure your brakes can keep you safe on the road.
